"Xiamen" round-the-world sailboat completed a 316-day sea voyage and arrived in Xiamen Wuyuan Bay on 14th September, 2012.

The establishment of a maritime museum in Xiamen was proposed by Xiamen Jiusan Society at a recent meeting.

As an education base of maritime science and technology, the establishment of Xiamen Maritime Museum will provide a platform for popularizing its maritime culture resources to the public, and lay the groundwork for its blueprint of an international shipping centre in South China, according to the Xiamen Jiusan Society (九三学社), one of eight legally recognized political parties in China.

According to the Xiamen Jiusan Society, the world’s famous maritime museums including Navy Museum of Lisbon in Portugal, Maritime Museum of Barcelona in Spain and British National Maritime Museum in London have played an important role in the development of these well-known port cities.

Meanwhile, the establishment of the Xiamen Maritime Museum will also spur the development of the local port tourism, which will dedicated to all aspects of the history of navigation in Xiamen such as the round-the-world seafaring of "Xiamen" sailboat - the first Chinese sailboat to travel around the geographical shape of the Earth and pass through the world's two most dangerous capes, Cape Horn and Cape of Good Hope.
