'Shocked': Gwyneth Paltrow has spoken about Hollywood's notorious casting couch

Just starting out: The actress in the early Nineties at the start of her career

Gwyneth Paltrow has spoken about her experience with Hollywood's notorious casting couch.

The Oscar-winning actress revealed that she was propositioned by an unnamed film executive when she was first trying to break into acting.

The 38-year-old says she was left stunned by the offer, which she promptly refused.

She tells Elle magazine: 'When I was just starting out, someone suggested that we finish a meeting in the bedroom, I left. I was pretty shocked.

'I could see how someone who didn't know better might worry, "My career will be ruined if I don't give this guy a b*** j**!"'

Gwyneth landed her significant film role in 1991, playing a young Wendy in the Peter Pan movie, Hook.

She went on to become an in demand leading lady, even landing an Academy Award for Shakespeare in Love.

But after taking time out from the spotlight to spend with her family, including rocker husband Chris Martin and their children Apple, six, and Moses, four, she now feels 'dejected' by the lack of variety in the roles she is offered.

Gwyneth said: 'There are a lot of roles that are OK, but there's little that's really good, especially for someone my age.

'Sometimes you find out that something you really liked is going to someone 10 years younger.

'I find it heartening that Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock have been able to find and create amazing projects.'

Gwyneth is one of the stars being honored for having an impact on the film industry in Elle's Women in Hollywood November issue.

Hilary Swank, Kate Hudson, Sofia Coppola, Kerry Washington, Diane Keaton, Jodie Foster and Diane Kruger also feature in the edition.
