Nexus one is expected to be unveiled later today

GOOGLE is expected to unveil its own branded mobile phone later today following weeks of mounting speculation.

The web giant has said it will hold a "significant" press conference at its Mountain View HQ in California.
Many industry experts anticipate the phone will be launched during the event.

Pictures of the phone have already appeared widely on the web despite Google's attempts to keep its launch top secret.

It is believed Google will sell the phone - called the Nexus One - directly to customers or through mobile phone operators at a reduced price.

Leaked documents suggests it will cost more than USD 500 (around GBP 310) to buy outright or USD 180 (GBP111) with a two-year T-Mobile contract.

It will use an android operating system which is already available on other phones.

The system has been designed to make it easier for users to access web sites and services.

The Nexus One, which has a camera with a flash, is expected to be slimmer than the market-leading Apple iPhone.

Google employees have been testing out the Nexus One since last month.

Analyst Rob Enderle of the Silicon Valley-based Enderle Group said: "All eyes are on the Nexus One.

"It looks like Google is moving to see if they can do the Apple thing."
