Number 1 ... Mumford & Sons - Little Lion Man

THE Triple J Hottest 100 winner was never going to be the hottest news in town after the winner was leaked by the ABC days prior to being broadcast, but the countdown still revealed a few surprises.

Mumford & Sons' Little Lion Man secured the number one spot by the largest margin in the countdown's twenty-one-year history.

Last week the ABC Shop website accidentally revealed the winning song while promoting February's JMag.

While Triple J declined to reveal exactly how many votes the UK nu-folksters won by, the number of voters in the annual poll was said to be up by 30 per cent on the previous year.

131,000 Aussies cast 1.1 million votes to decide the winner.

Triple J also played down any suggestion that the unveiling of this year's result had been dampened by the leak.
"We knew the Hottest 100 was popular but the response to the leak was a really heartening indication of just how big it is," said Triple J Marketing Manager, Ruby Grennan.

"Mumford & Sons Little Lion Man won by such a huge margin that it was never going to be a big surprise to our listeners.

"This year’s Hottest 100 was the biggest one ever and having one song leaked from 100 didn’t dent our broadcast or listeners enthusiasm for the countdown," Grennan said.

Despite Triple J's Hottest 100 Of All Time - broadcast in June last year - failing to feature a single female entry, 2009's gender balance was a little kinder.

73 of the top 100 songs originated from male artists, while 20 songs were from female artists and 7 from male/female ensembles.

Sydney pop rockers Art vs. Science were runners-up in the annual music poll with Parlez Vous Francais? and Aussie hip-hop stars the Hilltop Hoods grabbed third place with Chase That Feeling.

French pop rockers Phoenix were fourth with Lisztomania, while Sydney's energetic pop-rock quintet Bluejuice came in at No.5 with Broken Leg.
