FILMMAKER James Cameron has topped himself.
The sci-fi blockbuster Avatar has passed the global box office gross of Titanic, the previous world-wide record holder at $ 1.843 billion, according to estimates by sources at 20th Century Fox, the studio behind Avatar. Both blockbusters were directed by Cameron.
Official numbers on Avatar's global gross are expected to be released Tuesday. Barring some unusual development, those figures will show that Avatar's global gross has topped that of Titanic.
According to box office figures from Hollywood.com, Avatar is currently No. 2 on the all-time U.S. domestic gross list with $ 551,741,499, behind Titanic, which has taken in $ 600.8 million domestically.
So far, Avatar has won the Golden Globe for best director (Cameron) and best motion picture drama, among other honors.
If Avatar goes on to win some major Oscars, that will no doubt help it increase its box-office totals. The 82nd Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 7.
The top world-wide grossing films of all time are now as follows:
1. Avatar
2. Titanic ($ 1.843 billion, Paramount)
3. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ($ 1.129 billion, New Line)
4. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($ 1.061 billion, Buena Vista)
5. The Dark Knight ($ 1.022 billion, Warner Bros.)
