The Cultural Week of Fujian province kicked off at the World Expo on Tuesday. An array of cultural activities including stage performances and exhibitions displaying the beauty of east China's Fujian Province are on hand to meet visitors in an effort to introduce more people to the region.
Over forty performances are tailored for Expo visitors in the coming week. The shows cover a wide range of genres, including song and dance performances, dramas, and acrobatics.
The cultural week also features an exhibition showcasing the intangible cultural heritages of the region. For example, there are wooden sculptures on display, and performances of Nanyin, a traditional opera sung in the south Fujian dialect with a history of more than one thousand years.
The Fujian Cultural Week is highlighted by an acrobatic program called "Rope Spinning." The show, performed by artists from the Fujian Provincial Acrobatic Troupe, mesmerizes audiences with their stunning skills and seamless teamwork. Although performers are all very young, with an average age of less than twenty, each has been in the industry for over ten years.
Lin Fang, director of Fujian Provincial Acrobatic Troupe, said, "There's a saying in acrobatic circles - China boasts the highest level of rope related skills around the world, and Fujian acrobatic artists are the best across China. Our performers are well versed in rope spinning. We've staged a new version for the Shanghai Expo, which includes thirty performers."
The piece is adapted from one out of the troupe's repertoire. The original version needed only nine performers.
Lin Mengyin, acrobat, said, "It's not a one man show. Good communication is a must between you and your partners in order to perform the piece well. But we're cool with that because we've practiced rope spinning for four or five years."
Apart from the stage performances, the Fujian Cultural Week also features interactive street shows where visitors can mingle with artists in the parades inside Expo Park.
Nearly five hundred Fujian artists are roaming around the Park every afternoon during the provinces Cultural Week, adding a hilarious atmosphere to the event.
