We are calling on our readers to assist us in a very worthwhile cleanup and tree rescue operation on Gulangyu Island.
Sadly, the ancient trees on Gulangyu Island were not spared from Typhoon Meranti's trail of destruction. Some 3,000 trees were badly damaged in the storm and are now in need of timely care. In addition, 25 walls collapsed, and more than 25 roads are still blocked by the fallen trees.

As usual, to maintain tranquility on Gulangyu, vehicles are not allowed, hence heavy-duty machinery, bulldozers, and loaders cannot be deployed on the island. As a result, most of the recovery work must be done by hand and human physical power.

Gulangyu was scheduled to be inspected by a team of UNESCO Heritage experts, but the visit was postponed due to the untimely damaged done by Meranti. Now, time is short; the team's visit has been rescheduled to sometime in October.

The WOX cleanup is scheduled for Sunday. There will be a crew working before us on Saturday. But there will be much more work than they can possibly finish. We will be taking over where they leave off.
If you want Gulangyu to be included on the UNESCO World Heritage protection list, please lend a helping hand. Gulangyu needs your help!
At 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 25th, we will congregate at the Lundu Ferry Terminal (opposite Zhongshanlu Pedestrian Street). A dedicated ferry will take us from there to Gulangyu. You can return anytime you wish, but please specify a time well beforehand so the ferry can be arranged.
