Topic: The 3 most shocking things for Chinese in the West
Inspired by the post "What were the 3 most shocking things for you in China?" http://whatsonxiamen.com/forum-topic-265.html. Let's turn it around now and see what we can come up with. I'll start with my list. These are guesses as I don't know what would shock Chinese people most, so input from Chinese who spent some time abroad would be welcome.

1. The complete absence of private rooms in restaurants.
2. Eating raw vegetables and drinking cold water.
3. Young people with rather extreme hair and dress like goths or punkers. I can even come up with another list of three, hahaha.
4. Eating food with your fingers and then sucking the crumbs off afterward. (not sure about this one, but I think it would be quite shocking as Chinese don't eat anything with their fingers).
5. Couples kissing in the streets.
6. Public displays of nudity such as nude beaches and women wearing shirts with low cleavage.

About the number 4 - I 've seen a lot of Chinese people eating with their hands too, but my grandfather used to scold me all the time... "You are a girl, stop licking your fingers." :-p But I still love sucking the crumbs out of my fingers... :-)

Let me add a few questions I was asked:

1. Why do westerners queue up for EVERYTHING?
2. How can westerners eat salty flavored beans?
3. How can westerners eat raw meat, as carpaccio or half done beef with all that blood?
4. Why do westerners stare at me while I am talking to someone? Small note: the person is on the other side of the hall
5. How can westerners eat with a fork? How much rice can one put on a fork?
6. How can westerners make friend with an African? Sorry, if there is any african here, but some people really asked me this question.
7. Why do westerners wear so little clothes? Don't u feel cold?
8. Why do westerners always follow the procedures? It takes so much more time to get the same thing done.
9. Why do westerners waste their money on floor cleanser products when water can do the same job?
10. Why do westerners take so many baths a day?
11. Why do westerners take bath after delivering a baby? How can westerners take care of the baby and do house chores just like usual after delivery? Why don't westerners don't undergo the confinement period and rules?
12. Why wear a baby/child "so well"? They use the clothes just for a few months only. Why spend the unnecessary money?

And many more that I can't remember right now.

I am from America and I think that one of the most shocking things will be just how clean everything is. The streets, the buildings, the restaurants, and especially the bathrooms, public and restaurant. There are always paper towels and wastebaskets!
When I go home this is the first thing I notice too as soon as I get off the plane. CLEAN!

Remembered a few more

- Why do westerners treat dogs (pets) so well, like they are part of the family?
- Why do westerners call their parents, aunts, uncles, etc, by their name? And not by their "status" title? For example, if your MIL's name is Samantha, when u call her, you just say "Hi Samantha, how are you?" and why not "Mother, how are you?"
- Why do westerners don't have babies right after they get married?
- Why do westerners not get worried about marriage when they turn 30?

I can understand most of the questions they asked me, but there are still a few that I get puzzled... like the eating raw meat, for example. If they eat raw fish, pork blood, half done chicken, then what is the problem about the raw meat? Or the fork thing. Or the staring while they are "talking to someone on the other side of the hall". Still can't figure those out.

Just to keep a balance:

- Why do Westerners treat their dogs better than other human beings?
- Why do Westerners think they know everything better?
- Why do Westerners carry their snot around in their pockets?

1. The disrespectful way kids argue with their parents and hearing angry kids say they hate their parents
2. Putting parents into an old peoples' home instead of looking after them
3. The worry of getting mugged in a city center after dark or being attacked by drunk hooligans.

The list is endless but I'll stop at 3.

That's funny.

The most shocking chinese stuff all was weird.
But the most shocking western stuff is almost how amazing westerners are.

Why are westerners that overconfident when the most common chinese question is:

Why foreigners likes such an ugly chinese girls?

One I got asked by some Chinese Uni students was "Do Americans (westerners in general I guess) really wear their shoes in the house/on the couch/on the bed?" They had been watching a lot of American tv and couldn't believe that people would wear shoes inside given how filthy they must be.

That's a really good one, ozgal. I've found that in America, visitors rarely take shoes off in people's houses. In Europe, possibly less so.

I really love the way Chinese ALWAYS take their shoes off indoors. I even know people in China who wear one pair of shoes just for the bathroom and another pair for everywhere else in the apartment. It's clean and free so why not do it?

i hate taking my shoes off here in chinese homes because they do not provide any shoes in my size to wear inside. but generally it makes sense of course.

i dont think chinese children treat their parents worse or better than western kids.

most shocking should be how well the city traffic can be organized. but i guess chinese do not even notice the saftey on western european streets. that shocks me.

My culture is kind of mixed. We have many things in common with "westerners" and Chinese.
We always take off shoes when we enter the house. (That's Chinese)
We take a shower very often, sometimes several times a day (Western).
We also have this parent-child, higher-lower status hierarchy (Chinese).
We call our relatives by their names (Western).
But this is not the point. We are talking about shocking things for Chinese in the West.

My Chinese friends are shocked by "shameless" ability of westerners to talk openly about sex, easily having one night stands, and even discuss it with friends.
