Topic: China - Japan. Make love not war.
Just read the article about the annual air-raid drill in Xiamen where, at 15:00 today (10th May) there will be a siren and 400,000 students from across Xiamen will seek shelter.

http://www.whatsonxiamen.com/event2711.html

I quote WOX "Xiamen was invaded by Japanese troops on 10th May, 1938. Therefore, Xiamen selected this special day as its Air-Raid Drill Day to arouse resident’s patriotism and raise the younger generations’ awareness of national defense."

...In England we celebrate Armistice Day (11/11) for the end of the First World War. We celebrate VE Day (08/05) for the day the allies formally beat Nazism in Europe. But what I find too much of a hollow cliché is the brainwashing in China to hate the Japanese.

Europe has forgiven and made peace with this era. The only reason I hear from Chinese friends why China hasn't, is that the Japanese have never officially apologised. This seems to be a fragile excuse since it links people with politics in an unrealistic way. Let politics happen, there is a lot of valuable lessons we can learn, and culture to appreciate, from such an advanced civilization as Japan.

I see this sadly lost on many Chinese teenagers who tell me how much they want to destroy Japan. Woh! Where is that coming from? Make love not war. Their parents could give the world a break by a more enlightened approach - make love not war!

one easy way of uniting people is the idea of a "common enemy". i feel sorry for the general Chinese public, not being able to form an opinion without their government's "advice" (aka mass media). oh well, ignorance is bliss.

The Chinese hate Japan? How strange. They're, like, exactly the same. It's nearly the same country, right? I mean, they all look the same so it's really no difference.

Except Japan has better beef.

Next you'll be telling me ridiculous stories about them being at war for centuries.

Don't forget that Japan legalized mistresses while China is in the process of legalization!

Also, Japan has a shortage of youth to support seniors and society. China has a large rural population and an excess of young males. There can only be one solution.

Actually, I start to know some history about the invading of Japanese Troops in 1937 to Nanking recently.

In order not to guided by wrong message, I always find the international website and watch the movie called "Nanking" which is not shooted by our people.

And after seeing the movie, I can not stop finding all historic materials about the "Rape of Nanking". Did you guys see the black-and-white photo on which a kid, a little kid, was raped and killed and lying there on the ground. Did you see the photos piles of piles of children's corpses. I am a mother and I am nearly broken down seeing these photos. And I am trembling writing down this.

I don't like some ways of our officials. Actually, many people know the politics is guided by some force. But history is already deeply rooted in the people. I don't know how much the teenagers know about the invading and some of their words are over much, but I know, after finding all these materials, I won't be calm when I know sometimes the government of Japan pay homage to Yasukuni Jinjia where the criminals of the evil war were respected there.

Please, find some material to know the history and reconsidering your critics.

Thelma, I appreciate your sentiment, your outrage, and your compassion. I share it! I think if we left that era without learning lessons about peace, the human tragedy would be even greater than the horror that it is.

We do hear, read and sympathise with the Manchurian situation. I was forced to study it at school. My objection to you does not come from my lack of sympathy, in fact, it comes from the same feeling of sympathy.

Looking at maps through history it is easy to see how many nations on this Earth have invaded and have been invaded... and who are now still occupying, by force, a foreign land whom they are raping of their culture and trying to destroy their religion and their spirit. Palestine is a perfect example of this. We must all ask ourselves this question, 'Is our country doing that now?'

In my case, being British, I therefore ask myself about Britain.

China throughout a long history has expanded to dominate enemies and contracted under the treacheries of her enemies. Lets all hope she can overcome her enemies and prosper rightfully, eh!

MrKent, in China, there are many dark sides of the society. Some government doings disgust us.But I believe the whole nation is going on its way and still believe if the people can get more educated of advanced knowledge, things will come better.

If you stay here for a while, maybe sometimes you can find our people are kindly to westerners. I think part of the reason is that because during the war, many westerners help us and save a lot of lives. We really feel deeply grateful.

For this topic, I just want to say "Peace, it is the best thing."

My girlfriend woke up because of hearing this siren sound and her immediate response was: "Are the Japanese attacking us again?" But instead of preparing for war she continued sleeping.

Isn't it a symbolic reaction?

It's funny how they are quick to forgive Mao Zedong for killing so many KMTs during the revolution. Some of my students even believed they never killed each other because they were all Chinese and they would only kill Japanese soldiers.

Hello! Civil war? What did their guns shoot? Flowers?

Personally I also used to think that the chinese should just get over it and move on. Afterall, no one else in Asia is as anti-japanese as the chinese, and the chinese were not the only people invaded by the Japs. After all, the europeans don't hate the germans now as far as I know and they all seem to get along pretty well.

BUT, I guess after learning more and more, and visiting the Nanjing massacare museum and The Yasukuni shrine in Japan, I have concluded that the Japanese comparison is not exactly similar to what the germans did to europe.

It is maybe more comparable to what happened to the Jews. Nowadays in most western countries, especially US, if anyone told the Jews to "GET OVER WW2", you will be called anti-semitic and your career might be over (if you are a politician or in the entertainment industry).

Both Jews and Chinese suffered many many years of tortures, gassing, fatal experiments, etc. All very horrible stuff. I am not saying that we should go beat up japanese people. Japs that I know nowadays are all pretty cool people.

But You will not see a shrine in Germany commemorating the 3rd Reich and his fellow nazis. Also in ww2, germany was taken over and everyone at the top replaced. In japan, they were not replaced and many of them continued their lives in the government. The emperor stayed on.

If people are saying the chinese should get over it, then the same people should also ask the Jews to get over the concentration camps.

Feel free to discuss your views with me. I mean no offense. Just sharing my opinion.

But it is also obvious that the Chinese government promotes the anti-japanese sentiment a bit too much, from time to time when they feel like it.

For a few years, japanese are cool, doing business with them is good, then suddenly some issue comes up, and Japanese people totally unrelated to the issue get beaten up, shops get burnt, random toyotas and hondas get scratched. that is just retarded.

I blame that behaviour on the chinese government.

I went to Chengdu a few years ago and ate at the japanese restaurant there in their walking street (equivalent of zhong shan lu). Then I went to my hotel, took a nap, went back there after maybe 4 hours. The restaurant was totally destroyed and the police conveniently "arrived late". But it is the chinese business man running that restuarant and the chinese workers there that suffer. I doubt insurance covers that.

So all that behaviour is retarded and the chinese government seems ok with letting it happen from time to time. that is wrong.

To navman:
you got to the point--worshiping the shrine still.

Your 2nd posting, if you were right, then what better actions could those emotional Chengdu Chinese had done, when they watched news and saw Japanese continuously worshiping the shrine?

Still rememer many U.S. mothers took to the street crying out"STOP THE WAR, BRING BACK MY SON!"a few years ago.

I am sure many Japanese mothers had felt the same in 1938s.

QUESTION: How can we balance?
