Are there any danger signs I should look for in pregnancy?

Yes. Occasionally, a baby decides to complicate your life even before he is born. There are a few tricks a baby may try that cause symptoms your doctor will want to know about as soon as they occur. These symptoms do not necessarily spell problems. They indicate some treatment may be needed to avoid problems. Call your doctor if any of the following symptoms appear.

Bloody Discharge from Vagina – Early in pregnancy, this could mean a threatened miscarriage. Later, a bloody discharge could mean the afterbirth is in front of the baby, separation of the afterbirth before labor or the onset of labor.

In the first part of pregnancy, if bleeding is staining – less than the amount of your normal menstrual flow – the news can keep until morning. In the second half of pregnancy, notify the doctor immediately, regardless of the amount of bleeding. This does not include pink, mucoid discharge near the time the baby is due.

Persistent, Severe Headache – This can indicate toxemia of pregnancy, high blood pressure or, in rare cases, a brain tumor.

Severe, Persistent Nausea and Vomiting – When you vomit several times within a few hours, it is a danger sign. Report it immediately to your doctor.

Chills and Fever Over 100F (40C) – High fever can injure or even destroy a fetus. Report a high fever, particularly with a chill, immediately to your doctor.

Swelling of Ankles, Feet, Hands and Face – This can be an indication of toxemia of pregnancy and should be reported to your doctor. Puffiness of the face, eyes or fingers is significant if it is very sudden. Swelling of the legs and ankles when the face and hands are uninvolved may not be significant, especially in hot weather.

Severe Abdominal Pain – Unless it is a momentary catch or associated with constipation, report abdominal pain to your doctor. Pregnant women can have appendicitis and gall bladder attacks.
Frequent, Burning Urination – This usually indicates a bladder infection. Report it to your doctor to obtain effective relief from the symptoms. He will also prescribe a cure for the infection.

Reduced Amount of Urine – This can occur with or without increased thirst. If you are thirsty, your doctor will check for diabetes. If no diabetes is found, a decrease in the amount of urine can still be a serious sigh. Let your doctor rule out any kidney trouble.

Dimness or Blurring of Vision – This is important in the second half of pregnancy.
Sudden Gush of Water from Vagina – This could indicate the opening of the membranes, resulting in the uncontrolled escape of watery fluid. When the bag of waters breaks, labor usually ensures, regardless of the duration of the pregnancy.
