The giant panda “Ji Li”, who arrived at Xiamen Haicang Safari Park on 1st January this year, will leave Xiamen for Canada together with another panda from Chongqing next year, reports Xiamen Evening News.

According to an agreement signed by the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens (CAZG) Saturday and two Canadian zoos in Chongqing, a municipality in southwest China, China will loan two giant pandas to Canadian zoos for a 10-year research program.

"Ji Li" and "Er Shun", a male panda from a zoo in Chongqing, will stay in the Toronto and Calgary zoos for five years each after they arrive in Canada early next year, according to the agreement.

The panda pair, both around five years old, will be the first pair of pandas to visit Canada since the 1980s, Xinhua reported.

According to an early agreement signed by Haicang Safari Park and Chengdu Panda Base, "Ji Li" should stay in Xiamen for three years. As "Ji Li" is chosen as the best spouse of “Er Shun” for the breeding program, Chengdu Panda Base said they will send another panda to Xiamen to replace "Ji Li".

Giant pandas are one of the world's most endangered species. Currently, only about 1,590 Giant pandas live in the wild, mostly confined to the jungles in south-western China’s Sichuan province. About 300 others have been bred in captivity.
