With Xiamen’s extensive beach areas and excellent sailing conditions, the selection committee for the world’s largest sailing catamaran class, Hobie 16, has included the Xiamen as a potential site for the class 2015 World Championships.

The 2014 Hobie Cat 16 World Championships were held in Australia during May 2014. Over 900 sailors from 25 countries participated.

“With Xiamen’s desire to become a world-class sailing city, hosting the Hobie 16 World Championships will bring international notoriety,” said David Winter, local representative for the selection committee. He continued, “With appropriate support from government and private sponsors, Xiamen has the potential for hosting the ‘best ever’ Hobie 16 World Championships.”

Xiamen is one of several China host cities competing to host this event which will be held late July/early August 2015.

Said Winter, “It’s been difficult contacting relevant government offices for appropriate invitations for the selection committee which will arrive late July. This event provides extraordinary opportunity for Xiamen to establish the reputation as China’s ‘sailing city.’ We hope interest will grow quickly.”
