The city of Xiamen says it has set aside 1.1 billion yuan ($700 million) in funds for its greening efforts this year, Strait News reported on March 12, citing the municipal park bureau

The report added that the city plans to plant 2.7 million trees, around 800,000 of them on Xiamen Island.

There will be some new parks outside the Xiamen Island using more than 100 hectares of land in the city’s goal to have 40 percent or more of its area green, with a per capita park area of 11 square meters.

It also plans to do more along 30 boulevards and in parking lots in the urban district and, in rural areas, will begin work in nine nearby towns, while promoting agro-tourism in nearby villages, with a forestation plan that covers 667 hectares.

Xiamen should be more selective with the varieties of trees and plants chosen for greening programs. Should plant more "native Xiamen & Fujian trees" to attract the re-populations of natives birds breeding, native animals & reptiles and insects etc. Planting non-natives trees will not provide much animals diversity.
