Starting July 1, Xiamen will launch a marine expressway to reduce accidents happening at sea, according to a press conference co-held by the Xiamen Municipal Government and the Fujian Marine Affairs Bureau on June 25.

It will be the first marine expressway to be put into service in Fujian.

The expressway will consist of a deep-water route, two warning zones, two reporting routes and two reporting spots.

With a total length of 9.56 nautical miles, the deep-water route will have a width of 450 meters and navigation depth of -15 meters. Large-scale ships weighing more than 50,000 tons or drafting more than 12.5 meters will be required to use the deep-water route while leaving or entering the Xiamen port. Other ships can use the route as long as they follow Xiamen VTS Center’s commands and don’t affect the egress of the higher priority ships.

The deep-water route is expected to reduce sea accidents by 30 percent and increase navigation efficiency by 50 percent, according to marine experts.
