Located right in the centre of the North Xiamen Bay development district, the Gaoqi area is speeding up the construction of railways, subways and civil aviation, aiming at building itself into the comprehensive transportation hub in Xiamen as well as the Western Taiwan Straits Economic Zone.

Xiamen plans to build 4 lines of urban-suburban metro, and 3 of them will join at the Gaoqi Station.

With the construction on Metro Line 1 started on November 13, 2013, Xiamen is expected to enter into "the era of metro lines” in four years. According to the report released by Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Urban Planning in August 2013, the city government planned to build 4 lines of urban-suburban metro, the Xiamen Island - Jimei Line (Line 1), the Haicang - Xiamen Island - Xiang’an airport Line (Line 2), the Xiamen North Bay Line (Line 3) and the Island Ring Line (Line 4).

Among them, the Line 1, Line 2 and Line 4 will join at the Gaoqi Station, which will make it become the hub of Xiamen Metro System in the future.

Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport, located some 10km north of downtown Xiamen, is one the top-ranking airports in China. The airport has launched 75 air routes to 58 domestic cities and 17 foreign cities with 39 domestic and international airlines.

In 2012, Xiamen airport was the 8th busiest airport in China in terms of cargo traffic, and the 11th busiest in terms of passenger traffic with 17,354,076 passengers and the 10th busiest airport by traffic movements.

Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport currently has 3 terminal buildings, and the construction on the Terminal 4 building is expected to be completed before the end of 2014. The new terminal building, located on the northeast side of the existing facilities, will boast a total construction area of 72,000 square meters and is designed to handle an annual passenger traffic count of 12 million.

Covering an area of 1,300 square metres, the Gaoqi Railway Station was built along with the construction of Fuzhou Xiamen Railway, and has been put into use in 2011.

This year, Gaoqi Railway Station is set to get more facilities to meet the demands of a growing number of passengers. A new waiting area, equipped with 600 chairs, will be built outside the station. At the same time, a ticket office covering 250 square meters will also come up to house 5 new ticket counters, including 1 ticket refund/endorse counter.

With integration of airport, high-speed rail and subway capabilities, the Gaoqi area will be no doubt to play a key role in the rapid development of Xiamen. And with a prime location in the heart of the North Xiamen Bay development district, an area which is home to the only logistics park of Xiamen, its influence is expected to reach the Western Taiwan Straits Economic Zone as well as the South China area.
