Xiamen should take the lead in Fujian province to ban smoking in public places, officials of the Fujian Provincial Association of Industry and Commerce suggested at a meeting last week.

Smokers can be seen in public places such as parks, shopping malls, hotels, restaurants and elevators. Smoking will not only bring health problems to smokers, but also will be harmful to others as research has generated evidence that secondhand smoke causes the same problems as direct smoking.

Smoking has been banned in public places in several countries including Germany and Britain. Some China cities (such as Chongqing Municipality) have also carried out similar measures to ban smoking in some public places.

The officials also suggested that severe punishment including heavy fine and detention should be taken on smokers who violate the smoking control law.

China has 350 million smokers; therefore 540 million people are being exposed to the harmful effects of second-hand tobacco fumes, the officials said, adding that one third smokers is children under 15 years.
