The average life expectancy of Xiamen residents reached 78.72 in 2009, catching up with the average age of 76 in developed countries, according to a health work conference on Wednesday.

By the end of 2009, men in Xiamen had a life expectancy of 75.78 and 81.68 for women.

In 2009, the main health indicators of Xiamen population continue to lead in Fujian province. Among them, the maternal mortality rate was 12.85/10 million, a decrease of 25.72% from 2008.

The mortality rate of children under age 5, infant mortality and neonatal mortality rate were 6.47 ‰, 4.71 ‰, 2.78 ‰ respectively.

Life expectancy is a comprehensive reflection of the city’s health level. In 2008, the average life expectancy of Xiamen residents reached 78.25, exceeding the national average life expectancy of 71.4 in China.

This year, Xiamen will strive to push forward the reform of public hospitals, according to the conference. Xiamen has been chosen one of the 16 Chinese cities to pilot reform of government-run hospitals in an effort to ease public complaints of rising medical bills last month.

The cities are required to establish a reasonable, effective and optimized medical service system, and to fully motivate all medical workers to provide the public with safe, effective, convenient and affordable medical services.
