Xiamen BRT has been popular among commuters since it was open to traffic in 2008

The proposal of upgrading the Xiamen Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) to light rail transit (LRT) is under discussion again, reports fjsen.com.

The proposal had been turned down in 2006 and had been frozen temporarily for 4 years, according to the report.

LRT is a form of urban rail public transportation that generally has a lower capacity and lower speed than heavy rail and metro systems, but higher capacity and higher speed than traditional street-running tram systems.

It’s said that it’s time to build an LRT in a bid to meet the increasing transportation needs which outweigh the capacity of some routes of BRT during rush hours.

“The proposal for LRT is being under amendment and will be reported to the National Development and Reform Committee (NDRC) in the near future”, said Mr Zhao Yanjing, the director general of Xiamen City Planning Bureau.

Currently, the hot debate over LRT is whether to build the LRT on the base of the BRT or build the LRT separately.
