Travelers to Hangzhou must be impressed by its convenient public bicycle rental system. Xiamen will follow Hangzhou’s example to build its own public bicycle sharing system this year, Mr Wang Wei, deputy director of the Urban Planning Bureau of Xiamen addressed at a press conference on Feb.18, reports Straits Herald.

Statistics from the Urban Planning Bureau of Xiamen show 40% of Xiamen residents travel by walking & bicycling, 30% by public transport, and 8.2% by private cars. However, the area occupied by private cars is as 30 times as that of walking and as 15-20 times as that of bicycling.

In the future, Xiamen’s public bicycle system will connect the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, conventional public transit and urban rail transportation. It will provide a more convenient transport in residential and commercial areas, entertainment & sports centres, hospitals and schools.

After passengers get off from public transport, they can rent bicycles at a nearby bicycle serving spot and return at another spot around their house.
