The new airport will be built on reclaimed land near Dadeng Island in Xiang’an District, Xiamen

4 runways of 3,800 meters in length will be built at Xiamens new airport on Dadeng Island, Xiangan District. Upon completion, the airport will be the future aviation hub in southern Fujian, reports Xiamen Daily.

With a planning area of 25 square kilometers, the airport is scheduled to be open in 2019. It will accommodate the worlds largest passenger airliners Airbus A380 and Boeing 747 on its four top-class runways, according to Jiao Qian, managing director of the new airport construction.

Xiamen Gaoqi International Airports annual passenger throughput has reached 13 million in 2010, making its necessary to build a second airport in Xiamen.

The new airport was chosen to locate on Dadeng Island, a less densely populated island to reduce the noise in the downtown area of Xiamen Island.

Two out of the four runways will be built by 2030 to serve 45 million passengers per year, and the other 2 will be completed by 2040 to serve an annual passenger turnover of 70-75 million.
