Friday October 19 is the Chongyang Festival, which falls on the ninth day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. It is also called Double 9 Festival.

Historically, many people went hiking or climbing on this day. But these days it's now a special one for people to pay their respects to the elderly, and a day for the elderly to enjoy themselves.

An article in the Beijing Youth Daily said that although the day has been earmarked as China's Day for the Elderly, it is not as favored by many as Mother's Day or Father's Day, which are imported from the West.

Senior citizens interviewed by the paper said that what they would like to receive most on the day is not flowers or other possessions, but rather the company of their children.

The paper said that the fast pace of modern Chinese society is causing people to overlook the emotional needs of the country's elderly. It therefore calls on people to use the Chongyang Festival as an occasion to show and pay more respect to China's elderly.
