Rumors are circulating on the Internet that the Xiamen Metro Line 1 project may have been canceled due to its possible effects on the endangered Chinese White Dolphin.

The rumors said the environmental impact assessment report of the project can’t be approved by the Ministry of Environmental Protection due to its findings on the possible impact of the project on the endangered Chinese White Dolphin, and it could be replaced by alternative road or BRT projects.

However, Deputy Director of Xiamen Ocean and Fishery Bureau Zhou Lumin denied the rumors, saying the project has limited effects on the Chinese White Dolphin, both during its construction phase and during its future operation.

"The site selection, land use and energy efficient assessment reports of the project have been approved, and the funding commitment letter has also been issued. The project is now under further state scrutiny,” Zhou said.

"Although the metro line 1 will pass the Chinese White Dolphin protected areas, the noise it produces will not adversely affect the animal,” said Zhou.

The Xiamen Urban Rail Transit Group has also confirmed that they are now making preliminary preparations for the project, and could start construction on the line later this year.
