Xiamen will offer a monthly subsidy ranging from 800-1,600 yuan (about US$127-254) to qualified baristas this year to cope with the severe shortage of qualified baristas in the city, reports Xiamen Daily.

The Xiamen Human Resources and Social Security Bureau recently listed baristas as one of the type of jobs that are urgently needed in the city.

According to the bureau, there are more than 2,300 registered coffee shops throughout Xiamen, and the number is continuing to rise rapidly, but less than 10% of them have qualified baristas. Industry experts estimate that at least two to three thousand baristas are needed in Xiamen.

The bureau said they will offer 800, 1,200 and 1,600 yuan subsidies for qualified junior, intermediate and senior baristas respectively from this year.

Xiamen Tourism Training Center (XMTTC) will open a junior barista training course with Xiamen Tastefully Simple Coffee in May this year, and those interested can visit the official website of XMTT (Chinese language only)
