A teenager and his pregnant wife have been charged after he allegedly shot a policeman in the head during a routine traffic stop.
Eric Knysz, 19, was charged with murder of an officer and three other offences related to the fatal shooting of Trooper Paul Butterfield, The New York Daily News reported.
The suspected gunman's wife, 20-year-old Sarah Knysz, was also booked, accused of fleeing the scene with her husband, prosecutors said.
It is believed the shooting occurred when the officer randomly intercepted the couple, who are expecting their first child together.
"It appears to be simply a routine traffic stop … one that we see on the road all the time," prosecutor Paul Spagniola said.
Mr Spagniola said it was unknown what Kynsz's motive was, but said the pair were not wanted by police when initially pulled over.
"A lot of times homicides have no good reason," he said.
The couple were arrested after a shootout with police at in Michigan on Monday.
They had allegedly opened fire at officers, who had tracked them to the Mainstee County petrol station following the initial shooting.
