Thai senator invites Huaqiao Uni. to open overseas campus in Thailand

Following Xiamen University’s plan to establish a campus in Malaysia in 2015, Huaqiao University could be the second university in Xiamen to open an overseas campus in Thailand.

According to Haixi Morning News, the president of the senate of Thailand Mr. Nikom Wairatpanij invited Huaqiao University to open an overseas campus in Thailand when he was appointed an honorary professor at Huaqiao University at its Xiamen campus this summer.

President of Huaqiao University Jia YiMin said “This is a very good suggestion, and the school will carefully consider Senator Nikom’s advice.”

According to the latest statistics provided by the university, there are currently more than 3,600 overseas students from 30 countries or regions including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan in Huaqiao University, of whom 50% are from Southeast Asian countries.

With 50% of the overseas students at the university from Southeast Asian countries, Huaqiao University has become one of the universities with the largest numbers of Southeast Asian students in China.

Many members of Thailand’s upper and lower houses, Ministry of Defense, police and other government departments have previously studied Chinese language and culture in Huaqiao University.

Founded in 1960, Huaqiao University is an institution of higher learning especially set up to cater for overseas Chinese and the children of returnee Chinese. The university currently has campuses in Xiamen and Quanzhou. Currently, there are a total of 28,000 students, amongst which are more than 3600 overseas students from 30 countries or regions including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan
