Xiamen University sets up 'Advanced Confucius Institute' award

For the first time, Xiamen University has set up an “Advanced Confucius Institute” award, an “Outstanding Foreign Director of Confucius Institute” award and an “Outstanding Chinese Director of Confucius Institute” award for those who have made outstanding contributions to promoting Confucian culture this year.

The party secretary of Xiamen University Yang Zhenbin granted the awards to 4 Confucius institutes in Thailand, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and the United States, and 2 Confucius institute directors at a seminar on the Confucius Institute construction held in the university on Thursday.

The 4 “Advanced Confucius Institutes” this year are the Confucius Institute at Mae Fah Luang Unversity in Thailand, Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand, Cardiff University in United Kingdom, and San Diego State University in the United States.

The “Outstanding Foreign Director of Confucius Institute” was awarded to Mr. Joseph. E. Ahaneku of the Confucius Institute at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Nigeria, and the “Outstanding Chinese Director of Confucius Institute” title went to Mr. Pan Wei of the Confucius Institute at Saint Mary's University in Canada.

Mr. Yang Zhenbin said that Xiamen University has built 15 Confucius institutes and 40 Confucius classrooms in 12 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, America and Oceania over the past years, which have played an important role in exchanges between the universities and countries.

After 7 years of construction, the 15 Confucius institutes have developed quickly, playing a key role in promoting Chinese culture and enhancing understanding and friendship between the Chinese people and people all over the world, said Mr. Yang.
