According to the Xiamen International Marathon organizing committee, a total of 77,080 runners from 45 countries and regions have signed up for the 2014 Xiamen International marathon, which will be held on January 2nd, 2014. The number of runners this year is 4,000 more than last year.
60% of the runners are from Xiamen, while 904 are from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan as well as 276 runners from foreign countries. The rest are from other cities in mainland China. The event will include a Marathon (42.195 km), Half Marathon (21.0975 km), 10 KM Run and 5 KM Run and 3 package races: Cross-Strait Invitational Marathon Tournament, Wheelchair Half Marathon, and a Roller Skating 10 KM Race.
The organizing committee has also invited 29 top overseas runners (21 male, 8 female) from Kenya, Ethiopia, Morocco, Turkey, South Africa, and Eritrea to compete in the race. Among them, Ethiopia’s Negesse Shumi Endeshaw is the male runner with the best marathon record, as he finished 4th in the Dubai Marathon 2013 with a result of 02:04:52.
And the female runner with the best marathon record is Mare Dibaba Hurssa, who is also from Ethiopia. She finished 3rd in the Dubai Marathon 2012 with a result of 02:19:52.
The prize money for the full marathon winner is US $40,000, and the event also offers time awards of 10,000 USD to male runners who finish the race between 2:07:32- 2:08:30 and female runners who finish the race between 2:22:38 - 2:23:30. US $1 million will be awarded for setting a new world record.
