According to Strait News, a bookstore owner in Xiamen said he would keep his small bookstore open for his readers despite the sluggish sales caused by the popularity of e-books and online book purchasing. He has kept his promise, and his bookstore has been operating for over 22 years now.

The bookstore owner, surnamed Chen, runs Xin Xin Bookstore, which is only 50sqm and is surrounded by concrete buildings and the busy traffic flow of Hubin Bei Road near the Xiamen Municipal Government Building.

Talking about the store’s sluggish business in recent years, Mr. Chen smiled with embarrassment and said he can barely afford the store rent and daily expenses any more, but he insists on keeping his promise to continue running the bookstore for his regular customers.

"Many of my regular customers will come to the bookstore or ask me to buy the books for them after they search for the books online. They’ve showed their support for me in a variety of ways,” said Mr. Chen.

In fact, the bookstore saw its hay day around 1997, when Mr. Chen hired 3 employees to help him as the bookstore business was a promising venture for many at the time. However, the good ol’ days for bookstore owners didn’t last. In 2009, Mr. Chen felt panicked as his sales continued steadily declining.

According to Mr. Chen, some of the regular customers of the store persuaded him not to close the bookstore as they had gotten used to it and treat him like an old friend. “As long as I can make a living, I will not consider closing this bookstore,” said Mr. Chen.

The bookstore has many regular customers, with government officials included among them, according to the report.
