According to report by xmnn.cn, the floating population in Xiamen reached 2.07 million as of June this year, occupying over half of the city’s total population.

Floating population is a term used to describe a group of people who reside in a given population for a certain amount of time and for various reasons, but are not generally considered part of the official census count.

According to data released, in 2003 the floating population was about 700,200, and in 2008 it exceeded 1 million. By the end of 2013, there were 1,967,800 people with household registration in Xiamen, and 3.73 million people who reported living over half their year in Xiamen.

As one of the 40 pilot cities in China for equal family planning services for both registered population and floating population, Xiamen has established 67 family planning and management demonstration areas across the city and 150 service and management centers for the floating population in an effort to make them feel more secure in this coastal city.

The floating population is allowed to enjoy more benefits in Xiamen in terms of social welfare and education - one school in Tong’an District was set up specifically for Xiamen’s floating population children.
