US country music singer Randy Howard killed by bounty hunter.

A country music singer has died after being shot at his Tennessee house by a bounty hunter on Tuesday night.

Randy Howard, 65, was wanted over a fourth offensive DUI charge, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a firearm while intoxicated, and driving on a revoked license, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The bounty hunter, Jackie Shell, pursued Mr Howard after the singer failed to show up at a scheduled court appearance, according to agency spokesman Josh DeVine.

DeVine said Howard had opened fire first before Shell shot back and allegedly killed the singer.

The spokesman also said Shell was injured in the shooting but didn’t say how badly.

Terry Dotson, a friend of the Howards, told Nashville TV station WSMV that he had tried to drive the singer to his court appearance, but he was brushed off.

"He said he wasn't going back to jail. That's what he told me,” Dotson said.

While many states require bondsman to have licenses, Tennessee does not.

In Howard's case, the bounty hunter did have a warrant but investigators said Howard was inside his home where he did have a right to defend himself.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation are now looking into the circumstances of Tuesday night’s shooting.

Howard released seven records, including All American Redneck in 1983, and the self-titled Randy Howard in 1988.
