A man from East China's Anhui Province, who has claimed that his kidney was stolen by a doctor during chest surgery in June last year, on Saturday went to a hospital in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province to find out the truth.
Liu Yongwei, 43, had surgery at the Affiliate Hospital of Xuzhou Medical College in Jiangsu on June 20 after he was involved in a car accident, breaking a few bones and injuring his liver and right kidney.
Liu says he found out that his right kidney had gone missing in January this year during a regular checkup, and claims that the surgeon might have "done something" with his organ.
Liu went to Nanjing General Hospital with Xuzhou government officials on Saturday morning as he refused to believe the local authorities' explanation that his kidney might have simply shrunk due to blood flow problems caused by his injuries, Jinling Evening News reported Sunday.
Liu's wife said that since Liu had the surgery one year ago his scar has been leaking pus, adding that she doesn't believe the officials' explanation on Liu's kidney.
The Xuzhou hospital denied these claims in a statement on Thursday, saying that Liu's kidney was still in his body on June 25, five days after he underwent the surgery. The hospital also posted two CAT scan pictures in the statement, which they said showed Liu's kidneys in his body.
Yang Yu, an official from the hospital, said on Friday that Liu's kidney might have shrunk but where it actually is needs further investigation.
