Xiamen University, which has one of China’s most beautiful university campuses, celebrated its 96th birthday on April 6th this year, and the latest progress on its largest renovation project in 15 years was revealed.
Three highlights of the renovation projects are as follows:
Renovation on Yanwu Field
Yanwu Field will be put into use by the end of this June. It will be rotated by 90 degrees to face south to north, expanding from 20,000 to 45,000 square meters. 19 basketball courts will be added.
It will be the first sports field with blue-colored running tracks in Xiamen.
New South Gate
A new south gate will be built during the renovation project. It will be the only gate for tourists, and will face the sea.
A wonderful view spanning both sides of a central axis is part of the renovation project. When the project is complete, visitors will have a good view of the bronze statue of Tan Kah Kee at the central axis.
Underground Visitor Centre
The Visitor Center includes a waiting area about 30,000 square meters in size, and a nearly 20,000-square-meter library. The library will be open to visitors for free all day long.
The Visitor Center allows natural light to run deep underground. It is expected to begin a half-year trial run in September. The campus will be open to tourists only at designated times and along designated routes, and tourists will be required to register at the Visitor Center.
Underground Parking Lot
The new underground parking lot is about 80,000 square meters in size and will have 2,000 parking spaces. It is expected to open in September. The underground parking garage is believed to be the largest underground parking lot in Xiamen.
Cars will no longer be allowed to park at main teaching areas on campus, except for some vehicles with official duties.
