China's national observatory issued a blue alert for Merbok earlier on Monday, the state Xinhua news agency reported, the least serious level on its four-tier, colour-coded weather-warning system.

Merbok is expected to make landfall within 50 kilometres of Hong Kong by midnight on Tuesday (Jun 13th, 2017), according to the Observatory. The eye of tropical storm Merbok, this year's second but the first to hit China, was above the South China Sea some 90 kilometers south of Shenzhen at 6 p.m. on Monday, according to the National Meteorological Center.

The Shenzhen weather observatory issued a yellow alert for Merbok at 1 pm on Monday. Schools have been suspended.

Xiamen is expected to experience rainfall from today to June 18th, according to Xiamen Meteorological Center.

Residents are advised to reduce outdoor activities to avoid possible landslide and other accidents caused by continuous rainfall.
