The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has announced to relax its rules on the use of portable electronic devices (PEDs) onboard aircrafts during a press conference held in Beijing.

The new regulations, to take effect from October, 2017, will allow domestic airlines companies to evaluate the impact of portable electronic devices on flights and develop their own management rules.

The CAAC has also developed an approval process to deal with applications from carriers and assess whether they have the technological capabilities for offering call-making services without hindering pilots' navigation systems.

"I believe in the near future, passengers will be able to use portable electronic devices on Chinese airlines," said Zhu Tao, Deputy Director of the administration’s flight standards department, during the press conference.

At present, passengers on Chinese airlines still have to obey current regulations, which require them to turn off PEDs during flights.
