Travel time between Xiamen Island and Zhangzhou City is expected to be shortened to 30 minutes upon completion of the Xiamen-Zhangzhou Intercity Main Road. The new road is scheduled to be put into use prior to the 2018 Chinese New Year.

The new roadway stretches from the Taiwanese Investment Zone in Zhangzhou to three connection points in Xiamen, namely Haixiang Avenue/海翔大道, Jiaosong Road/角嵩路, and Gangzhong Road/港中路, with a total length of 39.6 kilometers.

Its main section will have eight lanes in two directions and a planned speed limit of 80 km/h, and its subsection will have six lanes in two directions and a planned speed limit of 40 km/h.

Xiamen-Zhangzhou Intercity Rail Line (R3)

With a planned investment of 15 billion yuan, the intercity rail line will link Zhangzhou's downtown area to downtown Xiamen (Xiamen Railway Station), passing through Longhai, the Zhangzhou Development Zone, and the Xiamen-Zhangzhou undersea tunnel.

Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2020.

The Xiamen-Zhangzhou intercity rail line (R3) has been listed as a provincial key project. The 71-km journey from Xiamen to Zhangzhou is expected to be shortened to 50 minutes.

Xiamen-Zhangzhou Undersea Tunnel

With a planned investment of 2.9 billion yuan, the construction of the 6-km two-way tunnel is expected to take about 5 years to complete.

It will be the second maritime tunnel between Xiamen and Zhangzhou, following the Xiamen-Zhangzhou Cross-sea Bridge, which is currently the longest cross-sea bridge in Fujian Province and was put into service on May 28th, 2013.

The undersea tunnel is expected to link Xiamen University on Xiamen Island with South Fort in the Zhangzhou Development Zone. It will share the route with the planned Xiamen-Zhangzhou Intercity Rail Line (R3).
