Around the year 2025, Xiamen will play a more important role as a transportation hub. According to the "Fujian Medium to Long-term Plan for the Railway Network," transportation time from Xiamen to 21 major Chinese cities will be reduced to seven hours via high-speed rail. Travel time among cities in Fujian Province will be reduced to two hours.

According to the plan, the total length of railways in Fujian Province will reach 6,828 kilometers as of the year 2025. The proportion of high-speed railway, express railway, and normal-speed railway lines will be as follows:

High-speed rails

(Above 250 km/h)

Express rails

(160-250 km/h)

Normal-speed rails

(Below 160km/h)

21 major Chinese cities to be within Xiamen's "7-hour travel circle":

Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Changsha, Nanchang, Hangzhou, Hefei, Wuhan, Shanghai, Nanjing, Zhengzhou, Xi’an, Chongqing, Chengdu, Guiyang, Nanning, Qingdao, Jinan, Shijiazhuang, Kunming, Tianjin, and Beijing

The Nansanlong Railway (Nanping-Sanming-Longyan Railway), the Fuping Railway (Fuzhou-Pingtan Railway) and the Fuxia High-speed Railway (Fuzhou-Xiamen High-speed Railway) are expected to be completed in early 2018, 2019, and 2022, respectively. Upon their completion, travel time among cities within Fujian Province will be shortened.
