The construction on the undersea part of the tunnel has begun early this year.

Construction on the Haicang Tunnel, which includes a 2.8-kilometer-long undersea project and a 3.5-kilometer-long land project, is expected to be 75-percent complete by the end of 2018.

Construction on the undersea project began early this year.

Construction on the tunnel is expected to be complete in 2019. The tunnel's roadway will be put into service in 2020.

Billed as Xiamen's "Second West Channel," the tunnel starts at the intersection of Haicang Avenue and Maqing Road in Haicang District, and goes under the sea at the intersection of Haicang Avenue and Yongjun Road, reaching land near the No. 14 Berth at Xiangyu Pier on Xiamen Island, and ending at Huoju Bei Road in Huli District.

Currently, Haicang Bridge, Xiamen's busiest bridge, is the main channel linking Haicaing District with Xiamen Island.

In 2019, Xiamen's second Metro Line, linking Wuyuanwan on Xiamen Island with Tianzhu Mountain in Haicang District, is expected to begin trial operation. The metro line will ease traffic pressure on Haicang Bridge.
