According to the Xiamen Municipal Tourism Development Commission, Xiamen's tourism economy developed rapidly in the first half of 2018.

The coastal city received 39.2929 million domestic and international tourists in the first six months of the year, up by 12.28 percent over the same period last year. Total tourism revenue for the period amounted to RMB 62.869 billion, a year-on-year increase of 17.63 percent.

Xiamen's international reputation was enhanced after the annual BRICS Summit was held in September last year, and Gulangyu (also known as Kulangsu), a small historical island off Xiamen’s coast, officially became a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

From January to June, Xiamen received 1.3351 million overnight tourists, 47.5 percent of which were international tourists mainly from Japan, America, Malaysia, Singapore, and Korea.

Meanwhile, the number of Taiwanese visitors who stayed overnight in Xiamen increased by 20.16 percent year-on-year to 0.5305 million. Taiwanese visitors made up 39.73 percent of total overnight tourists in the first half of 2018.
