Data from 2015 to 2018 showed that divorces in Xiamen among post-1980s generation couples and post-1970s generation couples accounted for 60 percent and nearly 40 percent respectively of the total number of divorces, according to a report released by the Xiamen Intermediate Court.
As China's only-child generation, the post-1980s generation is fueling a rising divorce rate.
The report also showed that 65 percent of divorce cases were initiated by women, countering the traditional view of male dominance in a family.
The main factors for the divorce trend were revealed to be as follows:
> Separation caused by work requirements or marital conflicts (accounting for nearly 40 percent);
> Disagreement with one of the spouse's parents (about 35 percent);
> Lack of understanding of each other before marriage (about 20 percent);
> Extramarital affairs (10 percent).
According to the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the People's Republic of China, the ten cities with the highest divorce rates in 2017 were Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Taipei, Hong Kong, Dalian, Hangzhou, and Harbin.
