Celebration begun in Xiamen as a true global Marathon City

The global celebrations of marathon started at coastal Chinese city Xiamen on Saturday.

Spyros Zagaris, mayor of Marathon City in Greece, lit the torch with the flame which was ignited at the birthplace of marathon, kicking off a global torch relay to celebrate the 2,500th birthday of marathon.

At the ceremony, Marathon City and Xiamen formed "a friendly tie", promising to cooperate in cultural and economic development.

The annual Xiamen Marathon started right after the ceremony, participated in by over 30,000 runners from 37 countries and regions.

Kenyan Mugo Smuel Muturi clinched the men's title in a time of two hours, eight minutes and 51 seconds, while Chen Rong led a 1-2-3 Chinese finish in the women's race.
