A man plunged to his death in the World Trade Mall after jumping from the fourth floor, but it is still unclear how he fell down, police said on Friday.

The man, about 30, fell down from the escalator on the fourth floor. One of his shoes was left near the handrail and the safety-net of the second floor was broken.

Some clerks on the fifth flour who allegedly witnessed the whole accident said the man suddenly climbed on the handrail while riding the escalator with his wife, who just stood next to him, caught his arm promptly.

The man hanged in midair trying to climb up and some women also came to help them, but they weren’t strong enough to pull him up and man fell down five minutes later.

However, some clerks on the fourth floor said the man didn’t want to live at all. He pushed off the wall with opposite force when people tried to pull him up and finally withdrew his arm from his wife’s grasp.

The man, surname Sun, came from Hubei Province, was said to be mentally ill. According to Xiamen police, he had thoughts of suicide because of work stress.
