Airlines are racking their brains to provide diversified in-flight food and drink to cater to customers

Air catering competition is heating up among airlines as they are trying their best to grab more customers.

According to China’s civil aviation system, currently, there are no uniform requirements set for air catering for domestic airlines.

Each airline provides in-flight food and drink in accordance with “industry rules” and different air routes, namely, for flights that include lunch or dinner time, and the flight time is 1.5 hours or above, passengers will be provided with meals such as rice, hot light meals or pasta; For flights within 1.5 hours, passengers will be provided with small snacks, such as peanuts and biscuits.

According to Hong Kong Dragon Airlines or "Dragonair" , they will provide hot meals such as Chinese-style rice and Western meals for economy-class passengers on long-distance flights. And for short-distance flights such as Xiamen-Sanya and Xiamen-Changsha, they only provide drink and cookies.

Dragon Airlines also joined hands with star hotels and restaurants in Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China to provide featured dishes on popular air routes such as Xiamen-Beijing and Xiamen-Shanghai routes. First-class passengers can even enjoy crab meat and other seasonal foods.

China Eastern Airlines provide afternoon tea on Xiamen-Beijing and Xiamen-Shanghai flights. The gold-relief tea sets for the first class cabin are ordered in accordance with five-star hotel standards.

Xiamen Airlines has also developed a variety of in-flight food with Minnan (south of Fujian) features, such as tea meals series and famous Minnan snacks.

The cost of in-flight food and drink only accounts for a small percent of the total operation cost. However, the improvement of this service can get quick results. Therefore, the competition of air catering is inevitable for airlines.
