A compulsive gambler in Shanghai chopped off one of his left fingers to show his resolve in kicking his habit.

The man, aged about 40, is from Fujian province. In the first eight months of this year, he is said to have gambled away more than 1 million yuan ($US147,059).

On the evening of Nov 11, the man told his wife he wanted to chop off a finger to show his determination to give up gambling.

His wife tried to stop him from doing so but he managed to buy a knife on the streets.
