The U.S Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009, which became law this summer, will be formally implemented by the end of the year.
Experts warn that without effective countermeasures, China’s food exports to the U.S may be reduced by 20%-30% in 2010.
The United States is a major market for Xiamen’s food exports.
According to statistics by the Xiamen Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, the exports from Xiamen to the U.S. stood at 110 million U.S. dollars from Jan. to Oct. 2009. The export goods were mainly vegetables, canned food, aquatic products and food packaging containers.
The number of enterprises involved is estimated to be about 200.
The Act requires enterprises to pay fees of varying amounts, and to strengthen the third-party inspection and certification, risk control, food recall, country of origin labeling and other measures.
The bureau has said it will promptly notify the enterprises of the relevant information to get prepared to avoid any unnecessary losses.
