An anhydrous ammonia leak occurred during the inspection of an anhydrous ammonia tank at a factory in Jimei District of Xiamen led to the evacuation of all workers Thursday morning, according to Friday’s Xiamen Economic Daily.

The accident occurred in a warehouse belonging to Intex Glass (Xiamen) Co Ltd at Xinglin Xi Road, Jimei District when a maintenance worker was inspecting the tank.

According to a factory worker surnamed Pan, the strong pressure in the tank pushed open the valve when three of the four screws on the valve had been unscrewed.

A noticeable cloud and odor forced the workers to flee the warehouse as the anhydrous ammonia leaked. The maintenance worker reported to police and firefighters in chemical protective suit were immediately called to the scene to dilute the anhydrous ammonia with high-pressure squirt guns.

According to the factory, the tank can store 0.8 tons of liquid ammonia, but the reserves were unknown at the time of the accident.

Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, police said.
