The Report delivered by General Secretary Hu Jintao to the 17th CPC National Congress made an explicit point of the government's decision to support "the development of the Western Taiwan Straits Economic Zone and other areas where Taiwan investment is concentrated".

This was the first time that the Economic Zone development has been mentioned in such significant reports. With the substantial support from the central government and departments concerned, Fujian is currently going all out to build an active and dynamic economic zone in China.

Not long ago, America's Chrysler Group and Japan's Mitsubishi Motors, two global automobile giants, invested 40 million US dollars in the cooperation with the Fjian-based Southeast Motor Co., Ltd. The automobile manufacturing base on the Western Taiwan Straits Economic Zone jointly developed by enterprises across the Taiwan Straits has promising prospects for international competition.

In the Southeast Auto City, a base covering an area of over 1,000 hectares, more than 30 world-class auto parts suppliers were located around the engine plant of Southeast Motor and most of them are from Taiwan.

Jian Qinglong, General Manager with Southeast Motor Co., Ltd. said, "This is the biggest advantage Fujian enjoys in its cooperation with Taiwan. We brought more than 30 Taiwan-based world-class car assembly plants to Fujian. They have now developed into an industrial cluster, which has greatly enhanced our competitiveness and reduced our cost."

The general trend involving Southeast Motor is that the highly-complementary cooperation between Fujian and Taiwan is growing closer. The industrial clustering is becoming increasingly active in the cooperation among different industries and inter-regional interaction.

Over the years, the investment has kept rising. Many top and even globally-leading manufacturers from Taiwan have launched cooperation projects with local enterprises in Fujian, such as TPV Electronics, CPT, AUO, Fuxin Steels in Xiamen and Taiwan Glass plants in southern Zhangzhou city and eastern Putian city.

The full-blown economic and trade cooperation across the Taiwan Straits is also contributing to the all-round accelerated development of the Western Taiwan Straits Economic Zone.

Professor Chen Mingsen, Dean of the Industry Development Institute of the Party School of CPC Fujian Provincial Committee said, "It is crucial that we improve the investment environment and avail ourselves of Taiwan's industrial shift, so as to enhance the interdependence and relations between Fujian and Taiwan. Meanwhile, Fujian needs to lead the country in facilitating civil exchanges and cooperation across the Straits and in contributing to the peaceful reunification of the motherland. '
