Extra long buses will be introduced to Xiamen BRT

Though the BRT system has just been in operation for less than a month, already it is not coping with the demand. Extra measures are being imposed by the Xiamen Public Transport Authority to keep up with the load.

According to Mr. Lin Jinping, the director of Xiamen city's Transport Committee, some of the BRT buses will be changed into 18 meters' long articulate buses in the very near future, and there will be 7 or 8 more BRT lines to be open within 3 years.

"The expected average number of passengers taking BRT is about 140,000 everyday, however, that number has been exceeded and reached as high as 200,000 per day, putting a strain on the newly open transport system," he said.

The 12 meters single coach bus is already too small to meet the increasing number of passengers. Often congested buses are making traveling very uncomfortable. Hence, it's necessary to use bigger coaches to accommodate the increasing demand. At the same time, Xiamen Transport Authority will also increase the number of runs of BRT to cope with the demand.

Apart from the above changes; there will be some changes in routes. The BRT2 line serving Gaoqi Airport to Xike will be slightly altered. Instead of starting from the Gaoqi Airport, the new route will start from the No.1 Port. It will run from the No.1 Port, connect to the old route at Gaoqi Airport and end at Xike in Jimei District.

Its route will be:

The No.1 Port (at the Intersection of Lujiang Dao and Xiahe Rd) -- Kaihe Rd Crossing -- Hubin Xi Rd -- Douxi Rd Bailuzhou Rd -- Hubin Zhong Rd – Houdaixi -- railway station – Mingfa -- Dongpu Rd -- Jinshang Rd,Agricultural Science Institute – Caitang – Jinshan – Mucuo -- Shuaishi Secondary School – Xianhou --Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport – Fenglin -- Hou’an -- Houtian – Dongting -- Meifeng Reservoir – Xiawei – Pantu -- Xike.

The BRT Transport Department has no clear date as to when the new coaches and the new routes will be implemented. Until such time, passengers are advised to keep an eye on the billboards placed at the various BRT stations for the latest happenings.
