I go there often, and i always been happy about it.
But yesterday i bought a spanish can of Olives with Anchovy filling, i thought i d treat myself to some tasty snack only to discover that the oilves were empty!! were not filled!!
Now i understnd that Metro itself got cheated by the spanish company that sells the olives but where is the quality check, this cannot just be 1 can, for sure is the whole batch! what about the import customs!!
My anger is over 9000 !!!!!
This is Xiamen Oasis for foreigners, also best beef you can get in Xiamen.
+ They have an awful lot of different things, both Chinese and imports food/drinks.
+ Fresh meat in full packages.
+ They're close to my work, so it's convenient to shop there before driving home.
+ Seems fairly well organised (but not perfect)
- Hard to reach, unless you can drive there yourself.
- Prices are not too competitive; Tastylife and RT-Mart (by the Westin Hotel) seem to have similar import goods at same or lower price.
- Requires a membership card for shopping (but is easy to get).
the only super market where we can find hilal food items
On recommendations from other WoX members we took the 22 bus from Xiada all the way to Metro, which is the last bus top on the 22 bus line.
It was a long journey but we found some things that we could not find in Tesco, Walmart or Carrefour - such as a range of cheeses, ham, meat, german style bread (sunflower; rye, pumpernickel) and some home goods (such as flat plates). the prices are OK, maybe a bit high for some things, but then finding some exclusive imported goods does come at a price.
we will go back from time to time as we need specialised items.
I would say that it is worth a visit, but make sure you have time for long commute and also time to have a good look around the very large store.
Still make my regular trips here to find things that you cannot find anywhere else in Xiamen. Worth the journey and will keep going back.
great !! they made this supermarket in wrong place, very far, you can not find any taxi or...
Huge inventories, reasonable prices, dull employees is all I can say. I'd go back again on some occasions. Although location is a huge problem for people like me who dare not venture farther than SM for foreign goods.
Poor management, poor service because some of them are just a lazy pigs honking around pretending that their busy.
I recently noticed quite a few items with higher price tags than in Tasty Life. There's quite a few other items there that are worth a trip though.
The best place to go if you want to buy stuff by bulk. But if you go there to buy just a few pieces of household items, it's not worth it some are even more expensive than the regular supermarkets. Also, it's much better to shop there if you have a car, if not then you will end up walking down the highway carrying all your stuff or your best option is to take the bus and get off at the busy area where a lot of taxi cabs would pass by.
I am a Xiamen metro-customer since 2004 and used to go there very often to buy imported food. High quality standard and a very large assortment. Sure in the meantime I got more used to Chinese merchandises and the choice of (smaller) import shops also increased. Some daily care stuff as kitchen-paper is quite expensive at metro. All-in-all the shop is not cheap but the choice makes the difference.
