A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Thursday to celebrate the maiden voyage of 3 solar-powered cruise ships on the city’s scenic Yundang Lake, which, according to HaiXi Morning News, will be used for the Yundang Lake night tour project.

The project will be officially launched during the 16th China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT), which will be held in the city from Sept 8th to 11th, said the report.

There will be two types of cruises, one luxuriously-decorated and well-equipped for business reception purposes and the other for ordinary tourist sightseeing, the report said. The business reception cruise can accommodate about 20 people while the sightseeing cruise will seat up to 40 people.

All the cruise boats, each weighing about 13 tons and measuring 15m in length, 6m in width, will be energy-saving and environmentally-friendly by harvesting energy from the sun. Solar panels installed on the top of the cruise will propel the ship and supply power for all electrical appliances and equipment on board.

The cruise can be fully charged in 4 or 5 hours under sufficient sunlight and travels at 8-10 km/h for 8-10 hours, the report said. While in continuous rainy days, the battery will be charged from the municipal power system.

Wastewater generated on the cruises will be collected in a tank and discharged within the city’s sewage system.

Details of the route and the ticket prices are unannounced.
