Xiamen Police have shut down 101 illegal B&B inns that were operating without a license in the city’s Zeng Cuo An area and arrested 101 illegal operators on Tuesday in a recent effort to regulate the chaotic B&B inn market.

"We had closed 90 unregistered illegal B&B inns in Zeng Cuo An prior to Tuesday’s action,” said a spokesman for the police.

Most of the illegal B&B inns were transformed from residential houses, which are not permitted to be used for commercial purposes, and there were often serious hidden fire safety hazards in these illegal B&B inns, said the spokesman.

According to relevant laws, these illegal operators could be held under administrative detention for 5 days and fined 500 yuan.

Zeng Cuo An, once a small fishing village, has quickly emerged as a popular B&B village and a paradise for artistic people from across China in a few short years thanks to its pleasant environment, artistic atmosphere and proximity to Xiamen University.

However, the boom in B&B inns, hostels, coffee shops, alongside the surging numbers of tourists during holidays have been increasingly affecting its development in recent years.
